How Many Ounces Are in a Pint?

The word pint might as well be synonymous with beer, so frequently is it used to describe it. There's almost zero chance you haven't heard, "have a pint" or "grab a pint" in your lifetime. However, where you are when you hear it matters, as not every country pours the same pint.

We'd go back to San Fran again anytime.

Before we kick it off though, check out this fire cider recipe which we've built, ingredients-wise, to be a pint.

How many ounces are in a US pint?

According to Merriam & Webster, a pint is, "a unit of capacity equal to 1/2 quart". A US liquid pint is 16 fl oz, and because we are based in the United States, we are going to generally reference the US fluid ounce on this site when discussing pints of beer. To clarify, you probably aren't asking for a pint of beer when it's a cheap beer.

Anyway, who knows, maybe we get crazy and start referring to kegs by their total fl oz - which if you are counting, is 1,984oz. 1984 is also the name of one of the best rock albums of the 80s, written by Van Halen, but we digress.

Anyway, what the above means at the bar is that if you want to drink an American Pint, you're going to need to ask for a draft, as bottles and cans primarily come in sizes of 12 fl oz (just like a lot of the best koozies do). This has changed somewhat, mostly due to the craft beer explosion in the United States.

How many ounces are in an Imperial Pint (UK)?

A pint of beer in the United Kingdom is a little bit heavier of a pour, coming in at 20 fl oz. If you were going beer for beer with a friend back home in the USA via Facetime, you'd undoubtedly get drunk quicker drinking imperial pints, assuming you were drinking either the same craft beer, or a beer with the same alcohol content.

Imperial Fluid Ounce vs U.S. Fl Oz

The reason for the difference between the United Kingdom's Imperial System, forming as part of the Weights & Measures Act of 1824, and the United States's shoot-from-the-hip approach (to everything) is that the U.S. broke apart from England prior the 1824 Act. Hats off to George Washington & team for that one. Way to dodge the UK pint!

Although, we'd love to drink an imperial gallon. Yeah. Might even drink one with a New England Patriots Pint Glass. Maybe even at a New England Revolution game at Gilette Stadium. An eagle just might fly by if we do.

Global Pint Conversion Table

Here is a comparison table of pints across the world using two different measurement systems. We are including the metric system measurements to be as thorough as possible, hence the conversion table of fluid oz to mls. For those who aren't familiar with the abbreviation, that is fluid ounces to millilitres.

  • US Pint = 16oz / 473ml
  • UK Imperial Pint = 20oz / 592ml
  • German Pintchen = 11.2oz / 330ml

Sometimes we wonder if we shouldn't be following German'y example for what size a standard pint of beer should be. After all, Germany's Weihenstephaner is the world's oldest brewery, having opened in 1040.

How to pour a proper pint of beer

You will need a clean pint glass. The only reason to ever use a dirty pint glass is if you were the one using it prior and it will contain the same beer that you previously drank out of it. And, obviously, you will need a pint or more of beer.

Pouring a proper pint, and we aren't discussing Guinness right now, takes time and practice. The Guinness shamrock takes even more. It's no wonder they need a fancy word like Sláinte! to celebrate with after that kind of pour.

We are still working on refining our process, but the steps to a pint pour are such:

  1. Tilt the pint glass
  2. Pour your beer slow
  3. Slowly adjust the angle toward vertical as you pour.

Drinking the pint, well that's a whole other conversation. You can sip it slowly. You can chug the beer. It's really up to you.

How many ounces in a dry pint?

This is a totally different question as a dry pint is nothing like a liquid pint. Whether you are measuring a pint of copper pennies is going to have a significantly different weight than a pint of blueberries on the scale.

Wild beer question, how many pints of blueberries do producers of Blueberry Ale use? We're thinking of of New England Breweries like Wachusett or Sea Dog.

How many bottles or cans of beer in a US pint?

3/4 of a pint, as the standard bottle or can of beer in the United States is 12 fluid ounces.

Breweries with Pint in the Name

Using the word pint in your brewery name isn't a bad idea, as people have an instant understanding of what it is your business does. You just need to find a fun, non-cliche way to work a pint of beer into your brewery's logo. Then you'll be brewing with gas - err, suppose that doesn't work as well as cooking.

Here are a few breweries in the United States who've done just that.

  • Pints Brewery & Sports Bar
  • The People's Pint
  • Empty Pint Brewing Company
  • Pies & Pints
  • Quigley's Pint & Plate
  • Pint Nine Brewing Company
