Quady Winery in Madera, California is open: Monday - Friday: 9am - 4:30pm, Saturday - Sunday: 12pm - 4:30pm, Closed on Holidays, No charge unless group is 10+ guests.Andrew and Laurel Quady left crowded southern California and their jobs in pyrotechnics and merchandising to pursue their dream: a non-urban way of life making wine.In 1975, at the urging of friend Darrell Corti, they made their first port from Amador County Zinfandel at the now defunct Lodi Vintners where Andrew was working as an assistant winemaker. In 1977, settled in Madera in California’s Central Valley with Andrew working at Heublein, they built a small winery behind their country home and made port on evenings and weekends.In 1980 they decided to add a fortified white dessert wine to their line. The wine, from the obscure Orange Muscat grape variety was named Essensia and became a major success. In 1983, opportunity knocked when they were offered a crop of Black Muscat grapes which became the first Elysium. Quady Winery specializes in dessert wines from under-appreciated muscat varieties, in ports, and in aperitif wines. Essensia and Electra made from Orange Muscat and Elysium and Red Electra from the Black Muscat variety can either accompany or replace a dessert and are best if served chilled. Starboard, a port type wine made in a fruit forward-softer style, is Quady's euphemism for port. It is made in two styles: Batch 88 for current drinking and Vintage Starboard, for bottle aging. Recently, Quady has introduced Vya Vermouths, made in two styles, extra dry and sweet, for use either as an aperitif or to mix with spirits. Vya is the vermouth for the connoisseur.
